Emerald Clarity and Oil Treatment Explained
Why almost every emerald is oiled, what 'minor' and 'insignificant' mean on a report, and how to care for an emerald ring.
Inclusions are normal
Emeralds grow with fluid and mineral inclusions the trade calls 'jardin'. An eye-clean emerald is rare; judge the stone at arm's length, not under a loupe.
Reading the oil grade
Labs grade clarity enhancement as none, insignificant, minor, moderate or significant. 'None' and 'insignificant' carry large premiums. Colombian stones with minor oil are the sweet spot for engagement rings.
Caring for emeralds
Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam. Clean with lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush, and have the setting checked each year.
